Keeping your devices going with the current constant changes

This applies if you are using a temporary phone (in this case an old Blackberry) for travel or for a festival so you can hopefully get gmail and Facebook. Plus how to find and restore missing apps on an Apple device. As these steps are scattered like grains across reams of Internet, help, blogs, forums, emails and texts so hope it helps.

Constant obstacles are appearing to keep using our devices.

After a frustrating day gathering this info, am writing it while it is fresh in my memory, in case it is of use to anyone.

iPod Touch (2014) (applies to similar Apple handsets)

Whatapp has withdrawn from older phones and will stop working on Blackberry 10 devices from 30 June 2017

The Storage on my ipod was almost full. That meant that the camera app and photos library app had disappeared. My aim was to upload my photo library to iCloud and delete from my device. I plugged the ipod into my computer and……more bafflement and information overwhelm.

My Settings app had disappeared. As had my Camera and Photos.

Facebook Messenger now only works on recent devices such as iPhone 5 or later

Instructions said to use “Spotlight Search“. Then it is hard to find what is called Spotlight Search. After prodding and swiping I found it: swipe down from middle of the homescreen.

So, by swiping down from middle of homescreen, the search box appeared. I typed in Settings and Camera and the apps have now reappeared.

By entering the Settings menu, I could click on iCloud and could upload my photos (in progress) to optomise storage. Sorted. (This was after attempts to import my photos to iPhoto which kept going round in circles as i didn’t have enough storage space).

Blackberry.

I set out to link my Gmail, Twitter and Facebook accounts to my old Blackberry Torch. Twitter is still alluding me.

  1. I had to call my network provider to tell them  what phone I was using and they reactivated my data plan.
  2. To enter my Blackberry ID (my email address) and password.

Then I could carry on.

Can use what seems like a vintage FB mobile app but not messenger

Facebook

It was a matter of memory, however it was straight forward, so just for quick reference.

Although the password was hidden. I mean come on! I can easily sit where someone can’t look at my password over my shoulder. But no I had to attempt it a few times to ensure the correct numbers and letter case were applied with just ******** to go by. Not helpful. Then on my computer in Facebook Notifications, it said a login attempt had been made and the map of where showed South Africa! Confusing and worrying. Considering they ask me to review a venue before I’ve bought a drink.  I said “it was me”.

I then got a text from FB with a 6 digit verification code to enter as the password. Facebook up. Phone too old for Messenger.

Gmail

This is the process:

  1. Login to Gmail on a computer.
  2. Go to Security Check Up.
  3. Click Done to scroll down (I tried clicking on the option I wanted)
  4. Select ‘Create App Password’. It gives you a 16 letter code xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx for quick reference, include the spaces.
  5. Then if you use 2-step verification, you will also need to enter the 6 digit code sent by text. Open the web browser to enter this.

Twitter

I logged in and it just says “The request has been understood but it has been refused.” That’s it. A day of searching in Twitter help, Google, YouTube…….nothing.
